Christmas and new year in Egypt

Christmas and new year in Egypt

The weather is pleasant in Cairo, Upper Egypt, and the Red Sea around Christmas and New Year. However it's cold on the north coast (Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh), you can't swim.
During two weeks you will have enough time to visit the major highlights in Cairo, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Luxor (including a Nile cruise) and couple of days on the Red Sea.
Neither Christmas nor the New Year are big events in Egypt. The majority of the Christians, who are known as the Copts, celebrate Christmas during the first part of January. On the other hand Christmas and New Year in Beirut, mostly in the Christian areas, is similar to Europe, colourful and bright.
Flights between Cairo and Beirut are very easy (1 hour). You can either chose Egypt Air or MEA - Middle East Airlines. The weather might be colder in Beirut (snow on the moutains).
You can book in Grand Pyramids Hotel

Christmas In Egypt | Grand Pyramids Hotel

Christmas In Egypt

If you hadn't ever seen the Christmas with the Eastern style, then you have the chance to see it in Egypt.

For the 40 days before Christmas Coptic Orthodox Christians fast (don't eat any meat products except for fish). This is called 'The Holy Nativity Fast'. The Coptic month leading to Christmas is called Kiahk. People sing special praise songs on Saturday nights before the Sunday Service.

Christmas Day isn't celebrated on the 25th December but on 7th January (like in Ethiopia and by some Orthodox Christians in Russia and Serbia). On Christmas eve (on 6th January), Coptic Christians go to church for a special liturgy or Service. On the Orthodox Christmas Day (7th) people come together in homes for parties and festivities.

Even though not many in Egypt are Christians, a lot of people in the country like to celebrate Christmas as a secular holiday. Christmas is becoming very commercial and most major supermarkets sell Christmas trees, Christmas food and decorations. Hotels, parks and streets are decorated for Christmas.

Cairo Tower | Cairo Hotels

North of the Cairo Opera House and Ahly Stadium, the Cairo Tower is the city’s most famous landmark after the Pyramids. Resembling a 185m-high wickerwork tube, the tower was built in 1961 as a thumb to the nose at the Americans, who had given Nasser the money used for its construction to buy US arms. The 360-degree views from the top are clearest in the late morning, after the haze burns off, or late afternoon.

The Citadel of Salah El-Din

The Citadel of Salah El-Din

Salah El-Din built the citadel and the fence around it using bricks from small pyramides in Giza. He built a well inside the citadel so that the army and the inhabitants of the citadel drink from it during the siege. This well was dug in the rocks with depth of 90 meters.
The citadel of Salah El-din is considered one of the most luxurious military castles built in the middle ages as it has a strategic and defensive location for the area of Cairo and Fostat

Sightseeing Of Dahshur

Sightseeing Of Dahshur

The Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid were constructed during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu (2613-2589 BCE), father of Khufu of the Old Kingdom. The shape of the Bent Pyramid is unique; it represents a transitional pyramid form believed to have been the result of an engineering crisis encountered during its construction. The Red Pyramid is the world's first true smooth-sided pyramid.

The pyramid of the 12th Dynasty king Amenemhat II (1929-1895 BCE) is now badly damaged. Next to it were found several undisturbed tombs of royal women still containing a large amount of jewellery. The pyramid of Sesostris III was part of a huge complex, with several smaller pyramids of royal women, along with another pyramid to the south. In a gallery tomb next to this pyramid were found two treasures of the king's daughters (Sithathor).

The Egyptian Museum, Cairo

The Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities contains many important pieces of ancient Egyptian history. It houses the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities, and many treasures of King Tutankhamen. The Egyptian government established the museum, built in 1835 near the Ezbekeyah Garden. The museum soon moved to Boulaq in 1858 because the original building was getting to be too small to hold all of the artifacts. In 1855, shortly after the artifacts were moved, Archduke Maximilian of Austria was given all of the artifacts. He hired a French architect to design and construct a new museum for the antiquities. The new building was to be constructed on the bank of the Nile River in Boulaq. In 1878, after the museum has been completed for some time, it suffered some irreversible damage; a flood of the Nile River caused the antiquities to be relocated to another museum, in Giza. The artifacts remained there until 1902 when they were moved, for the last time, to the current museum in Tahrir Square. During the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, the museum was broken into, and two mummies were reportedly destroyed. Several artifacts were also shown to have been damaged.

Pyramid Of Sakkara

Pyramid Of Sakkara

At Saqqara, the oldest complete stone building complex known in history was built: Djoser's step pyramid, built during the third dynasty. Another 16 Egyptian kings built pyramids at Saqqara, which are now in various states of preservation or dilapidation. High officials added private funeral monuments to this necropolis during the entire pharaonic period. It remained an important complex for non-royal burials and cult ceremonies for more than 3,000 years, well into Ptolemaic and Roman times.North of the area known as Saqqara lies Abusir; south lies Dahshur. The area running from Giza to Dahshur has been used as necropolis by the inhabitants of Memphis at different times, and it has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.

Giza Pyramids

Giza Pyramids

The Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops) is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact. Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek) over a 10 to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BC. Initially at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. Originally, the Great Pyramid was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface; what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories about the Great Pyramid's construction techniques. Most accepted construction hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.
